17 Reasons to Celebrate the United Nations Day

The United Nations, as an organization, is well known for its contribution to just about everyone across the world. They work ranges from assistance in times of disaster – be it natural disasters or those caused by the wages of war- to helping people enjoy some of the basic rights and privileges.

Recently, access to the internet was declared a basic human right, a declaration which ensures that everyone has access to the worldwide information and communication network. While this doesn’t guarantee that everyone will have the ability to access the internet, it does ensure that everyone has the right to.

The UN has been seen both as hero and villain, depending on which movie or show you wind up watching.

United Nations Day celebrates the foundation of this great organization and is a great opportunity for you to learn the truth about its past, its present, and what its plans are for the future.

History of the United Nations and its celebration

Celebrated on October 24, UN’s Day marks the anniversary of the ratification of the  Charter of the United Nations, by which the UN officially came into being.

Coming into effect after the two world wars and the cold war, the United Nations attempted to salvage humanity from the scourge of war and the wrath of destruction.

Aside from World Peace, its role has grown to include protecting human rights, promoting social and economic development, and providing aid around the world in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.

United Nations Day Celebrates the original enactment of the foundational charter for the UN.

This day marks the essential celebration of the values which this organization spells forth – the principles of humanity, unity, and world peace.  It’s also a date to increase awareness of the UN’s aims, projects and contribution to the world.

17 Reasons Why We Support the United Nations

On September 25th, 2015, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution 70/1 “Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

It was agreed that all its 193 member countries will adopt 17 Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) to secure a sustainable future for our people and planet.

The SDGs are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.

“We can be the first generation to end extreme poverty, the most determined generation in history to end injustice and inequality, and the last generation to be threatened by climate change.”

AIESEC and the United Nations

AIESEC  firmly believes that young people need to be at the center of the global development process.  Therefore, AIESEC and the United Nations have been working together to ensure that the world that we create tomorrow is aligned with the needs of youth today.

In December 2015, AIESECers from 120+ countries gathered at the UN Headquarters to participate in the achievement of SDGs.

Being the biggest youth-run organization, with a goal to engage every young person in the world to achieve peace and fulfillment of humankind’s potential, AIESEC  was declared the official ambassador of the SDGs for youth.

Since the past 3 years, AIESEC has been working without a pause to promote awareness for the SDGs, and to create projects that directly contribute for achieving the goals. The SDGs are a roadmap to the future we all long for, and AIESEC believes that the youth has the power to change the world.

Let’s not leave it up to anyone else. It’s time to get our hands dirty and work for the world we want to live in. The intention is not enough. We must ACT.

National flags are a mark of pride and patriotism in every country around the world.  But there is only one flag that belongs to all of us. That blue flag of the United Nations was a banner of hope for me growing up in wartime Korea.

Seven decades after its founding, the United Nations remains a beacon for all humanity.”

Secretary-General  of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon

Wondering how can you make these goals relevant in your country? What can you do to bring people together to contribute to its accomplishment?

Here’s your chance! Find a project for yourself and make a change for the world.

4 Unconventional Ways to Manage Stress

Stress is now being termed as a ‘growing youth epidemic’. According to surveys conducted by the American Psychological Association, most teens report stress levels higher than those considered healthy, and the add-ons include depression, chronic fatigue and a lack of appetite due to excessive stress.

With this concerning data, is past time that we all start taking our health more seriously, and do something to improve our mental health.

Here are a few ways to de-stress, unconventionally and effectively!

1. SLOW IT DOWN

When you rush things, your heart rate rises and your blood pressure spikes, inducing stress and discomfort. Event talking too fast makes your body tense and your breath shallow,  hence it is best advised to slow things down and let your words flow, instead of gush, during a conversation.

Focus on the moment-to-moment breakdown of a topic, instead of jumping to the next. This gives you and the people you are interacting with clarity, eliminating the need to over-explaining and overthinking.

Develop this into a habit, and you will slowly find your conversations much more meaningful and rewarding. This will put you at ease emotionally and physically.

2. UP THE ANTE WITH VITAMIN C

Studies have shown that vitamin C reduces both the physical and psychological effects of stress. It allows the body to regulate cortisol, which is a primary stress hormone, preventing blood pressure from spiking during a stressful time.

3. REDUCE EXTERNAL DISTURBANCE

Living in a noisy building or on a busy street leads to physical and mental stress, as the constant disturbance keeps your mind alert and on guard.

You can muffle that noise, reduce stress in and around you effectively. Some good noise cancellers options are thick curtains, a white noise machine – which emits a consistent, soothing sound – or just noise-canceling headphones – that play soothing music.

It’s not only about what you hear, but also what you see. Colors have a special effect on the way your body handles stress. Soft colors such as green, blue, and white help soothe the nervous system, while colors such as red may alarm you.

Similarly, calming fragrances like lavender and jasmine help stimulate your mind in a positive way. Incorporate these elements to create a corner solely dedicated to relaxation and to trigger and encourage emotional harmony.

4. PLAN AND ORGANISE

Panicking and being anxious about deadlines and unscheduled work is one of the major reasons why stress can escalate to drastic levels. During the crunch hour, plan out your time effectively, instead of trying to do a little of everything at once.

Scheduling and planning also calm your nerves. It makes you feel more in control and organized, as compared to when you execute the tasks randomly, and they seem never-ending.

This also helps you to prioritize your work in order of importance and gives you a crystal clear idea about how important each task is.

4 Lessons to Take from Rajkumar Hirani’s “Sanju”

Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘ Sanju ’ became one of the massive hits from Bollywood. Besides that, it also helped both Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt to elevate their film career.

Although the film gained appreciations from all quarters, it was also criticized for not showing all the aspects of the actor’s life. The film focused mainly on the father-son relationship between Sanjay and Sunil Dutt, and how his friends influenced his life.

Henceforth, the film showcased everyday life, which every person experiences in life – actor or non-actor.

But here are some very
important lessons that Hirani’s movie taught us 🙂

You can pick yourself up, even after falling

Due to his drug addiction, “Sanjay Dutt’ was sent to rehab. But, he started to pick himself up. However, the withdrawal symptoms became too painful, and his body craved drugs.

As a result, he ran away from rehab. During his time away, he begged on the streets to reach New York to his friend who could lend him money for drugs. And when he finally reached, he found his father there who got him back into the rehab. After this time though, Sanju was determined to make it through.

Invest in yourself if you need to

After coming back from rehab, Sanju hit the gym with a vengeance. He poured all his anger, frustration and insecurities into lifting weights, and no longer sought peace or comfort in drugs.

He started working on improving his acting skills and picked roles that suited his image and helped him in building on his strengths.

A key turning point in his acting career was when he signed up for the role of “Munnabhai MBBS” with father Sunil Dutt which he played effortlessly.

Your time will definitely come if you are right

Sanju was labeled as a terrorist by the media, under the TADA act for possessing an AK 56 rifle in connection with Mumbai blasts.

A lawyer advised him to accept the charges and turn as an approver, in exchange for which the lawyer can get him released. After this, he should run from India and live abroad.

sanju

Sanju refused to do it. As a consequence, he was sentenced to prison for 5 years for possession of arms. But, Supreme Court also removed the label of terrorist from him mentioning that, owning of arms doesn’t make him a terrorist. Hence, he served his time and was released later.

Had he ran from the country, he wouldn’t have been able to remove the tag of a terrorist that he was labelled with.

Depression is not the end of your life

His career and personal life had many ups and downs. In fact, he didn’t even remember the last moments of his mother’s life. His girlfriend ended up marrying someone else. All of this happened because of his drug addiction.

When Sanju was in depression and became a drug addict, he went to his father and asked for his help. Sunil Dutt admitted him to rehab, which occupied nearly one and a half year of his life to overcome the problem of drugs.

The movie was brutally harsh as it spoke of a broken childhood, drug abuse, the effect of bad company, imprisonment and also some consequences of a bad mental health (taking drugs in stress and it’s after effects).

Sanju teaches us important lessons which are really needed today.

Sometimes we may come under bad influences by circumstance, or do something wrong. But we can always come out of it and become a better person, even becoming an inspiration too 😉

Well, overcoming challenges always makes us a better person. At AIESEC we also believe that great things come out from our comforts zone. Therefore, we provide opportunities that put people into a challenging environment to bring out the best in them 🙂

What are the lessons that you learned from Sanju? Do let us know in the comments section below!

4 Tips for Anyone Trying to Make New Habits Stick

Some time ago I was reading Robin Sharma’s books, and I felt like I needed some change in my life. I then took up the habit of getting up early every day (around 5 am), to meditate, write, and exercise.

When I started this new habit, it felt amazing. I was proud of myself—I was doing it!

On top of the satisfaction, I really felt the benefit of being productive before everyone wakes up. It had a very positive effect on my life. I was upbeat, motivated, and I was doing things with a spring in my step.

It was amazing, for about two months. But then, normal life happened. I had been to bed later for some nights — parties with friends, watching a movie, etc — and tiredness, coupled with maybe the weariness of the new habits, quickly took over.

One morning, I did not jump out of bed and I was longing to roll over instead of starting my “productive morning.”

If you are a human being like me, I am sure you are very familiar with taking up new habits, only to give them up two or three weeks or months later.  We’ve all been there, right? Making promises to go to the gym three times a week, stop eating junk food, or stop drinking alcohol altogether?

We take up new habits, only to let them die away after a few weeks.

Have you noticed how different the feeling is between when you start and when you give up?

There’s indeed a very negative effect on your life, having a little voice in your head constantly reminding you that you have failed this or that.

You don’t have to beat yourself up for dropping new healthy habits. You’re not the only one out there; we’re all doing it (or not doing it). But don’t lose hope just yet!

I used to be very annoyed with myself when I stopped the new routine, as it gave me the feeling that my goal had not been achieved.

However, unless you are in a life-threatening situation and seriously need to change your lifestyle, I think that we need to take a different perspective on things.

Here are few practices that can help you sustain the habits you’ve been trying to cultivate – check them!

1. Don’t go wild with changes.

The most important part of building a new habit is setting attainable goals and staying consistent. It doesn’t matter how well you perform daily. Sustained effort is what makes the real difference.

For that reason, when you start a new habit it should be so easy that you can’t say no to it.

– Want to build an exercise habit? Pick some you can do even at home, for 7 minutes;
–
Want to increase your vocabulary? Learn three words a day;
– Want to create a healthy eating habit? Limit eating jun, don’t cut it at once;
– Want to read a new book? Have a goal of 4 pages per day.

It doesn’t matter if you start small because there will be plenty of time to pick up the intensity later. In the end, it’s about starting somewhere. 🙂

2. Reflect on what you have learned or gained, even if the habit has stopped.

Part of the reason we give up is that we put ourselves under pressure to make things happen quickly. We try to make grand, sweeping changes in our lives and expecting overnight change.

If this doesn’t happen we soon become discouraged and quit. We lose sight of any and all progress we’ve made towards our goals.

Stop!

Stop and reflect back on how far you’ve come since you started the habit. Maybe you practiced eating healthy for 3 months and left. But in those 3 months, your body benefitted with it and so did your life.

Stopping doesn’t mean you have failed. You can always get back up and try again.

3. Develop a plan

Dan John, a popular strength and conditioning coach, often tells his athletes:You’re not good enough to be disappointed.”

The same is true when you build a new habit. What were you expecting? To succeed without failing from the very beginning? To be perfect even when people who have been doing this for years make mistakes on a regular basis?

Address the root cause of what’s stopping you. Once you understand it completely make a plan on how you’re going to overcome it.

Here are a few tips you can use:

– Set proper time limits;
– Forget about performance and focus on growing;
– Make this your new motto: “never miss twice.”

The “never miss twice” motto is quite useful when you actually practice it. Maybe you’ll miss one workout, but you’re not going to miss two in a row. Maybe you’ll eat an entire pizza, but follow it up with a healthy meal.

4. Reward yourself

If you really aren’t good at making it to the gym every time you really, really, really want to, you might have to bribe yourself.

Transfer 5 bucks to your savings or Paytm account every time you do what you were trying to do-  or just put money in a jar. You’re not making any money, but you’ll have some savings to reward yourself later on.

There are no tricks, hacks, or ninja secrets to making it work.

These practices are incredibly simple and that’s exactly why they’re so powerful. We can set some rules for us or have no rules at all. The choice is ours. But it’s so simple, that if we commit to it, we can make it happen.

Simple doesn’t mean easy, these practices still take work. And that’s a good thing, as our goals will be all the sweeter if we’ve applied ourselves along the way.

Stay consistent and you may get surprised by where it takes you. 🙂

Let us know in the comments section below how your new habits are coming along for you.

Is Mental Health a Taboo? Why?

Adolescence and the early years of adulthood are a time for changes in life. Changing schools, changing friends, leaving home, starting university or even a new job. Many many things can occur. For some or many, these are exciting times. But, for some, they can also bring out stress and anxiety. In some cases,  these feelings can build up and affect your mental health.

And we constantly contribute to that even without noticing. Some “small” things can have a big impact. When you call a person fat or skinny, even though you aren’t serious about it.

That might be unknowingly hurtful to them, this bad feeling could result in increasing their anxiety levels.

Mental Health should not be a taboo.

You may think that mental health is something far from you, or it’s “an exaggeration”, but it’s more common than you think. A mental illness causes disturbances in thinking, behavior, energy or emotion that make it difficult to cope with the ordinary demands of life.

And there’s no right answer to what lead someone to become mentally ill. It can come from many things.

Research is starting to uncover the complicated causes of these diseases. It can include genetics, brain chemistry, brain structure, experiencing trauma and/or having another medical condition, like heart disease.

mental health - depression is a disorder not a decision

These are the most common mental health conditions, which you probably heard about before:

1. Anxiety Disorders – More than 18% of adults each year struggle with some type of anxiety disorder, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder (panic attacks), generalized anxiety disorder and specific phobias.

2. Mood Disorders – Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar depression, affect nearly 10% of adults each year and are characterized by difficulties in regulating one’s mood.

How can we look after it?

It’s important to take care of ourselves and others, to get the most from life. Here are some of the ways that you can start from today itself:

1. Talk and Listen

Talk about your feelings, it helps you to stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled. Don’t forget to listen to others as well 🙂

2. Exercise

Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and can help you concentrate, sleep, and look and feel better. Exercise keeps the brain and your other vital organs healthy and is very important towards improving your mental health.

3. Take a break

A change of environment is good for your mental health. Take a break and do something you feel good about. For instance: Volunteer, when you feel very unproductive about yourself.

4. Ask for help

We are humans, we all sometimes get tired or overwhelmed by how we feel or when things don’t go according to plan. If things are getting too much for you and you feel you can’t cope, ask for help.

5. Do something you’re good at

What activities do you lose yourself in? Play a loud music, bang your head to the beats, jump to reach the top of the world, enjoying yourself helps you to beat the stress 🙂

Even after trying a certain number of things, you still feel mentally tired or ill. You should go to a counselor. Yes, some people make fun about it and might call you crazy, but, that’s not true.

Imagine when you have flu, all you need is some dosage of medicines, and you’re back to healthy living. The same way our brain needs counseling sometimes and it’s back to the track, in fact sometimes we do better then we were doing initially.

We pick ourselves up, only after falling.

Mental Health Awareness is something much needed in today’s generation. It’s a delicate yet much-needed topic to be talked about. Sometimes the best we can do to help people going through a mental illness is listening and letting them know how to get some support. Do you know other ways that we can all do our part, breaking up the “taboo” status of Mental Health? Share your thoughts with us.
